What’s so good about bananas?

The reason I decided to write a whole book about bananas, is that over the last five years of eating a fruit based, mostly raw vegan diet, I’ve come to realize that to a large degree bananas are what made it possible! Let me explain! Fruit is our natural food as a species and it’s the only food that truly appeals to all our senses, in its raw natural state. It’s also the only food that is edible and delicious without any processing. There are so many fruits around the world, and they all have their own history and locations where they grow. If we had a tropical fruit orchard of our own, we would surely be able to live off the land and eat a new fruit every single day of the year! However, most of us don’t have an orchard like that, and we’re left with having to rely on commercially available fruits instead.

Of all the different fruits available around the world, even in the tropics, the banana is surely the most prolific. It’s everywhere. It’s cheap. It’s delicious. Most importantly though – it’s consistent. When you go to the supermarket to buy fruit, most of the fruit there will likely disappoint you. Most fruits, unless they are local, will be picked too early for them to develop enough sugar to truly satisfy our caloric needs. Let’s face it – if there’s no sugar in the fruit, the calorie density will be very low and it won’t be enjoyable to eat either! At any given time or place you might be able to find one or two seasonal fruits that turn out good, and that’s great, but you might also end up regularly having to throw out what you brought home when you find out it was no good.

This is where the banana differs. Bananas, like most other fruits destined for the commercial market, are indeed picked earlier than full maturity, and the quality do suffer, but here’s the thing – they still pack a similar amount of calories. The bananas develop their starch quite early in their growing process, and even when picked prematurely that starch will still convert to sugar once the enzymes in the fruit do their job. This is what’s known as ripening after picking. Practically, this means that when you go to buy your bananas, you can trust that they will deliver what you need. You can rest assured that next time you’re hungry, you can go grab some bananas, and they will satisfy your physiological need for fuel – as well as all the other dietary nutrients needed for optimal health.

This is the power of the banana over all other fruits available to the average consumer. They do what food is supposed to. They satiate. You can rely on them.

Depending on where you live, there might be plenty of other fruits to choose from that will also satisfy your nutritional needs of course, including that need for fuel in the form of simple sugars, but having bananas as a base food provides you with that consistency that’s necessary in order for a diet to be sustainable. Bananas work great as a caloric staple. They get the job done!

In this book you will learn:

  • What a banana is and where it comes from
  • The nutritional breakdown of the average banana
  • Why bananas are the most important fruit on a raw vegan diet
  • How to buy the best bananas available
  • How to store bananas at home
  • How to speed up, or slow down ripening
  • How to eat your bananas for the best possible results

Why do I have to learn this?

In plain and simple terms, this book teaches you the how of eating bananas. It may sound like a subject too simple for a whole book, but trust me – it isn’t. Fruit is alive! It’s not like buying a can of beans that’s the same every day of the year. Fruit changes from day to day, even hour to hour! There’s many things to consider when buying your bananas in the store, like whether or not they were actually picked too early or if they are in fact high quality.

Then there’s the whole subject of storing your bananas at home. Knowing what factors affect the ripening speed of your bananas and how to avoid having too many ripe bananas on your hands at once is important for someone trying to rely on fruit as their sole, or at least main, energy source.

Even eating bananas require knowledge and practice. When is the banana ripe for example? Why is it important that the banana is ripe? What does ripe even mean?

We’ll delve into all these topics, and many more, in The Little Banana Book. We’ll attack it from all angles: scientifically, experientially, practically – even philosophically!

This book is for anyone who wants to increase their fruit intake and feel happy about it too!
